Gen Z’s New Internet Tarot

12 years ago Sharon Courtot was told by her spiritual teacher she was going to learn tarot. A year later Sharon began taking clients. Though now she feels her business has become more of a spiritual guidance she still draws cards for the growing list of her Gen Z clients. The new generation of tarot readers has bought up a lot of questions for more experienced readers such as Courtot.

Q: What do you think draws people to Tarot?

A:  It's mysterious. A lot of life is mystery, isn't it? I think tarot talks to the subconscious mind. what's that phrase? I'm throwing shade on humanity. In a culture of wanting instantly, because we have things at our fingertips, people come in hoping tarot will tell them answers to what they need to do.

Q:Tarot has become popular recently on TikTok. Why do you think the younger generation has suddenly become so strong?

A:I think for some people it's instantaneous and they and they don't want to take responsibility for their life they want someone to tell them what to do. I think the younger generation has come in with a very different energy. Their intuition is wide open and it is definitely more concrete than religion

Q:As someone who's more experienced in Tarot what’s something the younger generation of readers should know?

A:It's not something you have to work for, or study, or read numerous books, even though all of us do that. I think most people don't understand it's already within us.

Q:On YouTube and Tik Tok Tarot readers will do general readings for mass audiences. Do you feel that is an accurate way you can do tarot

A: I love it. If you can’t afford to book a tarot reader and have a session, you at least have free access to someone. When you do a general reading, it's really picking up the energy of the collective at that time. I watch YouTube videos and I'm like, wow, that's spot on for my life right now. Take what fits and leave the rest.

Q: On TikTok love readings for the month or year are popular how do you feel about those? Plenty of people talk about those not coming true and are skeptical.

A: I think it’s good to have a healthy dose of skepticism. Those kinds of readings are very hard to do. I focus on the now because that's all we have is the now.

Q:Is there something you feel even skeptics could take away from the art of tarot?

A: Be open to possibilities.

Q: Doing these readings is very intimate. Has it changed the way you sympathize with others or how you see the world?

A: I've learned people are sometimes their own worst enemy. And I've also learned I think everyone in life wants to be seen and heard.

Q: Do you ever see reflections of yourself and other people?

A: Yeah, every time a client comes in and sits down, whether they're new or returning, I’m always wondering, what will I learn from this session? We are all mirrors for each other. I always teach what I need to learn.

Q: What’s the underlying question you think people come to tarot to answer?

A: Money, career and relationships. The underlying question is will I be okay

Q:If you were to pull a card for 2021 what card do you hope will come out?

A:The Sun. It's filled with hope. We need hope right now
